Stuff that matters

A crumbling home with a garden full of weeds is on the market – and lots of people are interested in buying the run-down property.

The house in Darlington, Western Australia, is now on the market for the first time in 45 years.

Its listing describes it as “rough around the edges, but a beauty” with only one bedroom, living area, kitchen, storage room, and an outdoor bathroom & cellar.

And that is evident as you look through the crumbling property, which needs a lot of care and attention.

The property is set to sell at auction on Saturday, December 19 and has a price guide of AUD $1.7 million to $1.8 million (£955,051 to 1,011,231 in sterling).

Estate agent George Lattouf of Laing and Simmons-Merrylands told realestate.com.au that his agency received more than 400 enquiries about the house after it was listed for sale.

And nearly 100 potential buyers have viewed the property – a mix of developers, families and renovators looking for a project.

“It’s attracted all types,” Mr Lattouf said, adding that the property would not be restored after being purchased.

“It’s a knockdown rebuild project … the house hasn’t been changed for more than 40 years.”

From the photographs on the listing, it’s clear that the single storey home has a lot of potential for transformation, including the huge garden behind the property.

Currently, there are two reception rooms and a kitchen – with a cooker that seen better days.

But after being knocked down, there would be a lot of space to work with and create an incredible home.

The listing notes that the area is in a popular location – with lots of lovely restaurants and cafés in walking distance.

It adds: “Placed on a landmark Street in a leafy location, walking distance to gourmet farmers at carriage works, University of Sydney, New South Wales Tafe of Sydney EORA, trendy cafes, parks, childcare centre and just a short stroll to Redfern and Macdonaldtown train station.

“The location, streetscape and neighbourhood are fantastic, the rest is up to you.”
